5,5-Bis(hydroxymethyl)-2-phenyl-1,3-dioxane is a model system for studying the reaction of the hydroxyl group with fluorine. The reaction is very efficient due to the presence of a reactive fluorine atom. The products are biodegradable and water soluble, which makes them suitable for use in cosmetics. This compound can also be used as an intermediate in organic synthesis reactions that require a reactive fluorine atom. 5,5-Bis(hydroxymethyl)-2-phenyl-1,3-dioxane has been used to synthesize retinoic acid and other molecules that have hydroxyl groups. It has also been shown to be able to form supramolecular structures with metal chelates and amides or carbonyl groups.
