4'-Nitro-4-dimethylaminoazobenzene is a constant, apolar, non-polar molecule that has a viscosity of 1.5. It has an absorption spectrum at 230 nm and emits fluorescence at 324 nm when excited with ultraviolet light. 4'-Nitro-4-dimethylaminoazobenzene is soluble in water and organic solvents. The molecule also exhibits nitrate ion binding and is activated by anions such as chloride, bromide, iodide, phosphate, perchlorate, or nitrate ions.
