4-Hydroxy-4'-dimethylaminoazobenzene is a mutant strain of the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It has been shown to be able to form conjugates with azobenzene and cytosolic proteins, as well as having a p450 activity. The molecule has also shown to be active in rat liver microsomes and 3-methylcholanthrene. This functional group reacts with hydrogen bonds, which are found in the membrane system and are present in reconstituted systems.
