3-Nitrothioanisole is a sulfoxide that is produced through the reaction of nitric acid with an aromatic compound. It can be used to synthesize other compounds, such as sulfones and sulfoxides, by hydrolysis or nucleophilic substitution. 3-Nitrothioanisole has been shown to react with triflic anhydride to form triflic anhydride. This reaction proceeds via the addition of the anhydride to the sulfoxide. The activated 3-nitrothioanisole then reacts with a nucleophile in solution to create a new compound.
