2-(2-Oxo-2-phenylethyl)benzoic acid is a cyclised compound that can be hydrolyzed to benzoic acid. It has been shown that 2-(2-Oxo-2-phenylethyl)benzoic acid can yield up to 68% of the theoretical amount of benzoic acid when hydrolyzed in alkaline solution. This reaction is catalyzed by thionyl chloride, which reduces the carbonyl group to an alcohol and a carboxylic acid. The stereospecificity of this reaction has been confirmed with diastereoisomers. 2-(2-Oxo-2-phenylethyl)benzoic acid also reacts with chlorine, transforming it into a chlorinated derivative.
