Excitons are pairs of electrons and holes that can be created when an electron moves from one level of energy to another. Energy transfer occurs when the electron moves from its initial state, which is excited, to the ground state. The energy is transferred to the hole in the ground state, which then moves to an excited state. In this way, both states are now at a lower energy level than before and have become non-excited. This process can also happen through an indirect route with the help of an acceptor molecule such as anthracene or deoxycholic acid. 4-Bromo-4'-chlorobenzophenone has shown efficient exciton generation in anthracene crystals at room temperature using a bathochromic shift.
