4-Chlorophthalide is an organochlorine compound that can be produced from the chlorination of phthalic acid. It has been shown to degrade at a faster rate than other chlorinated compounds and is classified as a biodegradable product. 4-Chlorophthalide can be used as an additive in plastics, textiles, or paper products. The chlorine atoms in this molecule are capable of reacting with other molecules to form new chemicals, such as amines. 4-Chlorophthalide is also soluble in solvents such as acetone and ethers.
