It reacts with potassium hydroxide at temperatures of 60°C and higher to form 2,2',3,4,4',5'-hexachlorobiphenyl. 2,2',3,4,4',5'-Hexachlorobiphenyl is also formed when 2,2',3,4,4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl is heated in the presence of sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide. The elimination reactions are performed in the presence of 0.1M nitrobenzene or 0.1M phenol as a solvent and can be conducted at temperatures between 50°C and 100°C.
