Statins are a class of drugs that inhibit the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which is involved in the synthesis of cholesterol. The effector functions of statins include inhibition of the synthesis of oncostatin M (OSM) and modulation of the immune system. Statins have been shown to reduce body mass index and serum levels in animal models.
