2-(5-tert-butyl-2-hydroxyphenyl)benzotriazole (2BHT) is a water treatment chemical that is used in the removal of organic matter from wastewaters. It can be used for wastewater treatment, where it acts as an absorber to remove organic materials from wastewater. 2BHT is a diazonium salt with two reactive groups: the hydroxyl group and the benzotriazole group. The hydroxyl group reacts with the persulfate ion, forming an intermediate sulfate ester that decomposes into water and sulfur dioxide gas. The benzotriazole group reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce a chloride ion and an unstable benzoquinone compound that decomposes into carbon dioxide and water.
