1-tert-Butyl-4-nitrobenzene is a nitrobenzene derivative with estrogenic activity. It has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of estradiol transport pathways, and inhibits the uv absorption of estradiol in vitro. 1-tert-Butyl-4-nitrobenzene has also been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in vivo by inhibiting nitrogen nucleophiles, such as cytochrome P450s. The hydroxyl group on the compound allows for biodegradation and prevents accumulation in the environment. The mechanism for 1-tert-Butyl-4-nitrobenzene is not well understood, but it is believed that it reacts with DNA by forming covalent bonds with either amine or thiol groups on nucleophilic sites.
