2,4,4-Trimethylpentanoic acid is an organic compound that is found in the form of an odorless oil. It has been used as a metabolic inhibitor in experimental studies to study the effects of metabolism on the activity of ion transport proteins. 2,4,4-Trimethylpentanoic acid has been shown to inhibit the transport of organic anions and cations across rat kidney cells. 2,4,4-Trimethylpentanoic acid also binds to and inhibits nephrotoxic drugs such as tetraethylammonium (TEA) and 4-aminopyridine (4AP). The binding of 2,4,4-trimethylpentanoic acid with TEA and 4AP inhibits their uptake into renal cells.
