3-(2-Hydroxyethyl)-1,3-oxazolidin-2-one is a synthetic compound that is used as an antioxidant and antibacterial agent. The chemical has been shown to be effective against a wide range of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses. 3-(2-Hydroxyethyl)-1,3-oxazolidin-2-one inhibits bacterial growth by modifying the cell membrane and disrupting the cell wall. This compound also has been found to react with amines in proteins, which may account for its antimicrobial activity. 3-(2-Hydroxyethyl)-1,3-oxazolidin-2-one reacts with oxygen to form hydroxyl radicals that can attack the lipid membrane of cells.
