Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) is a chlorinated organic compound that has been used as an insecticide and a pesticide. This molecule is a persistent organic pollutant, which can be found in the environment and in organisms. Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane has been shown to have genotoxic activity, which may lead to tumor formation in some cases. DDT also inhibits transcriptional regulation by binding to the TATA box region of the promoter sequence and altering its structure. The long-term toxicity of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane has not been well studied, but animal studies show that it can cause liver damage and cancer.
