1-[3-(2-Aminoethyl)-1H-indol-5-yl]ethanone, also known as 5-hydroxytryptophan (5HTP), is a naturally occurring amino acid that is derived from the essential amino acid tryptophan. It is the intermediate in the biosynthesis of serotonin, which is one of the body's natural neurotransmitters. 5HTP has been used to treat depression and anxiety. It has also been used to treat obesity and other conditions associated with low serotonin levels in the brain, such as fibromyalgia and chronic pain. The drug is available in oral form or as an implant. Iontophoresis can be used to increase uptake into cells. Pancreatic cancer cells have shown increased uptake of 5HTP when it was administered orally or by iontophoresis. This drug may be used for diagnostic purposes by implanting radioactive isotopes into 5HTP to monitor its uptake by cancer
