It is a ligand that binds to an iron catalyst and inhibits the fluxional activity of organic acids. 1,4-Dibromophthalazine has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells in vitro at concentrations as low as 0.1 mM. The anti-proliferative activities of 1,4-dibromophthalazine are due to its ability to bind to the DNA in cancer cells, which prevents DNA replication and transcription, leading to cell death.
