4-Butyl-2-nitroaniline is a chemical compound that can be synthesized by alkaline hydrolysis of 4-butylaniline and sodium hydroxide. The reaction yields a white solid product with a melting point of 130°C. This product can be purified by evaporating the solvent, potassium hydroxide, and sodium sulfide. Nitrite salts are used as catalysts in this process, which produces an oxidizing agent that removes the nitro group from the aniline molecule. This leaves behind 2-butanolamine and butadiene as products. 4-Butyl-2-nitroaniline has been shown to have a reaction yield of 85%. Organic solvents are used during this process to dissolve the reactants and to remove excess water. Anhydrous conditions must be maintained throughout this process, as any water present will cause hydrolysis of the nitrite salt.
