5-Butyl-1H-benzotriazole (5BBT) is a chemical that is used in the production of rubber and plastics. It has been shown to be an impurity in a variety of products, including cellular phones, computer monitors, and personal computers. 5BBT has been shown to inhibit the growth of test organisms at concentrations below 100 ppm. Chronic exposure to 5BBT can have neurotoxic effects on animals. The effect on humans is not known. 5BBT may cause visual disturbances because it causes acetonitrile to form in the eye. This chemical is not carcinogenic, but it may pose a health risk if inhaled or swallowed.
