Description

4-Hydroxy-3-nitroso-1-naphthalenesulfonic acid hydrate is a pharmaceutical drug that is used as an antioxidant and metal chelator. It has been shown to be effective in the delignification of wood pulp, which may be due to its ability to reversibly bind metal ions and prevent them from catalyzing oxidation reactions. This chemical has also been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans, by interfering with their metabolism. 4-Hydroxy-3-nitroso-1-naphthalenesulfonic acid hydrate is soluble in water, alcohols, ethers, chloroform, acetone, benzene, or dimethylformamide. It can be obtained by reacting hydrochloric acid with naphthalene. The reactants can then be separated using chromatographic methods.
