1-Ethyl-2-methylcyclohexane is a hydrocarbon with the chemical formula CH3CH2CH(CH3)C=CH2. It is a colorless, volatile liquid that is soluble in organic solvents such as benzene and acetone. 1-Ethyl-2-methylcyclohexane is used as an industrial solvent for paints, varnishes, and other coatings. It can also be used as a solvent in organic synthesis. The major impurities of 1-ethyl-2-methylcyclohexane are fatty acids, which are hydrogenated products of this compound. The fatty acids have been found to be carcinogenic to laboratory animals. Other impurities include aldehydes, which are formed during the oxidation of this compound. The most common impurity is methyl formate, which has been shown to cause liver tumors in rats when consumed orally.
