It is used in combination with a stabilizer, such as dodecyl sulfonate, to inhibit bacterial growth. 4-Hydroxy-8-methoxyquinoline-3-carboxylic acid inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the lipid II region of the bacterial cell membrane and forming a high affinity complex with dodecyl sulfonate. This results in inhibition of bacterial DNA synthesis and protein synthesis, leading to cell death.
