Hexarhodium(0) hexadecacarbonyl is a catalyst that is used in the reaction of sodium citrate and ethyl diazoacetate, which produces a number of reaction products. Hexarhodium(0) hexadecacarbonyl is activated by heat and absorbs light at 350 nm, exhibiting photoluminescence. The metal carbonyls are classified as Group P2 on the periodic table. They are most stable when they are bonded with two hydrogen atoms. Hexarhodium(0) hexadecacarbonyl undergoes nucleophilic attack from a carbonyl group to form an intermediate complex, which then reacts with another molecule. This mechanism requires high energy, so activation energies must be considered for the chemical stability of the catalyst. Spectral data can be obtained using nmr spectroscopy to help identify reaction products.
