Indigotetrasulfonic acid tetrapotassium salt hydrate (ITSS) is a sulfonic acid that has been used as a catalyst in the photoreduction of methane. It is also used as a surfactant to stabilize the emulsion of water and oil. ITSS has been shown to be an efficient catalyst for photobiol, which is the process in which light energy is used to reduce molecular oxygen to hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a photosensitizer such as riboflavin. ITSS has been shown to have many different functional groups, including sulfonic acids, carboxyls, phenols, and phosphoric acid esters. ITSS is also capable of binding with metal ions and water molecules.
ITSS can be found in tissues or tissues derived from organisms such as plants or animals.
