Persicoside is a polyphenolic compound found in persimmon fruit. It has been shown to have anti-bacterial and antioxidant properties, as well as the ability to modulate gene expression. Persicoside is synthesized from two amino acids, L-phenylalanine and L-rhamnose. The biosynthesis of this molecule occurs through the shikimate pathway and requires ultraviolet radiation for activation. Persicoside also inhibits bacterial growth by interfering with the synthesis of proteins that are necessary for cell wall construction.
