Description :4-Amino-2-mercaptobenzoic acid is an organic compound that is a ligand for the thiol group of cysteine. It binds to the amino acid histidine, which can be found in nature or unmodified in proteins. 4-Amino-2-mercaptobenzoic acid has been shown to have an electrospray ionization mass spectrometric and a spectroscopic technique to identify serum albumin after modification with this compound. This modified albumin has been used as a carrier of gold nanoparticles and other molecules. The disulfide bond between 4-amino-2-mercaptobenzoic acid and the protein can be reduced, forming covalent adducts.
