It has been used as an electron donor in the preparation of ethylenediamine and pyrrole. 5-tert-Butyl-4-hydroxybenzene-1,3-dicarbaldehyde can also be used as a catalyst for the conversion of ethylenediamine to 2,2'-ethane bis(diphenyl amine) (EBDA). This compound has been shown to catalyze the thermal decomposition of ethylenediamine at temperatures between 200 and 500 °C.
