1,3-Di-tert-butyl-2-thiourea is an oxidant that has been shown to be effective as a molybdenum ligand. It is used in the synthesis of xanthates and other compounds and has found application in the recycling of sodium sulfide. 1,3-Di-tert-butyl-2-thiourea is synthesized by reacting dibutyl mercaptan with calcium oxide and sodium sulfide in a two step process. The first step involves the formation of a mixed disulfide (1,3-di-(2′thienyl) butane). This mixed disulfide is then reacted with thiourea to form 1,3-di-(2′thienyl) butane Thiourea. The final product can be purified by distillation or recrystallization.
