Description

3-Oxo-12α-hydroxy-5β-cholanoic acid is a metabolite of bile acids that is produced by the liver. It appears in urine samples, and can be detected using gas chromatography. This compound has been shown to be elevated in individuals with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis and may play a role in the progression of this disease. 3-Oxo-12α-hydoxy-5β-cholanoic acid has also been found to inhibit β-glucuronidase activity, which leads to an increase in the levels of other bile acids.
