Phenylthiohydantoin-methionine (PTMH) is a sulfur containing compound that has been shown to be an inhibitor of the enzyme isozymes. PTMH inhibits the activity of enzymes in the TCA cycle and may play a role in cellular energy production. PTMH also binds to silver ions, forming a covalent bond. This compound has been shown to have cytotoxicity against lymphoblastoid cells and chloride channels, which may account for its ability to inhibit cell growth. PTMH also has an inhibitory effect on the synthesis of polypeptides as well as DNA replication.
