2,3-Dihydro-1,4-benzodioxin-2-one (BODIPY) is a fluorescent dye that has been shown to activate protein kinase C and histones. It also has been used as a model for the study of the lysine residues in histones. BODIPY binds to 2,6-dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHB), which is a chromophore that absorbs light at 300 nm. This binding causes the emission of fluorescence at 515 nm. The ring structure of BODIPY is cationic in nature and can be used to polymerize cationic polymers or attach heterobifunctional molecules. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy has been used to study its mechanistic properties, while photoexcited BODIPY monomers have been studied by gel permeation chromatography.
