It is used in biocontrol to control insects and has been found to be useful against virus, fungi, and protozoa. 1,5-Dibromo-3-methylpentane can act as an antibiotic and antifungal agent by inhibiting the synthesis of fatty acids. The chemical structure of 1,5-dibromo-3-methylpentane is very similar to that of natural pheromones in insects.
