Carbenicillin is an antibiotic that is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It inhibits the synthesis of proteins by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are enzymes that catalyze the formation of peptidoglycan, a major component of the bacterial cell wall. The binding of carbenicillin to PBPs prevents the formation of transpeptidase and transglycosylase complexes, leading to inhibition of protein synthesis and cell death. Carbenicillin has been shown to be effective in treating multidrug-resistant strains of bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Carbenicillin also has a number of other properties, including fluorescence and use as an experimental model for gentamicin.
