4-Trifluoromethanesulfonylphenyl)hydrazine is a neutral, styryl dye that has two distinct spectral bands: one bathochromic and the other hypsochromic. It is an alkaline substance that can be dissolved in water. 4-Trifluoromethanesulfonylphenyl)hydrazine is synthesized from the indoles or by substituting a hydrazine group for the hydroxy group of an indole derivative. This agent is also used to synthesize merocyanine dyes, which have a carbocyanine as the central chromophore. Merocyanine dyes are often used as fluorescent labels for nucleic acids because they emit light at wavelengths longer than those emitted by conventional fluorescein dyes.
