2,3,4,6-Tetrachlorobiphenyl is a model system for the study of dechlorination and dechlorination strategies. 2,3,4,6-Tetrachlorobiphenyl has been shown to be reductively decomposed by microorganisms in an incubated environment. Dechlorinating agents such as chlorine or proton have been found to be effective in the removal of 2,3,4,6-tetrachlorobiphenyl in laboratory experiments. The reductive dechlorination process is a biomimetic strategy that utilizes vitamin B12 as the catalyst. This process can be used for the remediation of chlorinated biphenyls and other chlorinated compounds with similar structures.
