Dimethyl (2-hydroxyethyl)phosphonate is a prenyl organocatalyst that has been used to produce polycarbonates with improved properties. It is biodegradable and can be prepared from readily available starting materials. Dimethyl 2-hydroxyethyl phosphonate has a molecular weight of 122.14 g/mol, the most common diameters are in the range of 100-300 nm, and it is soluble in organic solvents such as chloroform, ether, or acetone. This compound can be used to synthesize a variety of polymers via anionic polymerization methods including polycarbonates, polyesters, and polyurethanes.
Dimethyl 2-hydroxyethyl phosphonate can also be used to synthesize monomers for use in nanomaterials due to its ability to form unsymmetrical molecules and morphologies with hydrophobic and hydrophilic segments.
