N-Ethyl-N-butan-4-ol-nitrosamine (EBNN) is a carcinogenic substance that induces bladder cancer in rats. This substance is found in cigarette smoke and some food additives. EBNN is converted to 4-(N-nitrosomethyl)phenol, which binds to DNA and inhibits DNA synthesis, leading to tumorigenesis. EBNN has been shown to be an inhibitor of the growth of human bladder cancer cells. It also had potential inhibitory effects on the growth of polycystic ovarian syndrome tumors in hamsters.
