Description :
23-o-Desmycinosyl-tylosin is a macrolide antibiotic with potent antibacterial activity. It has been shown to be active against antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria. The compound binds to the 50S ribosome, inhibiting protein synthesis by preventing aminoacyl transfer from the acyl carrier protein to the peptidyl transferase center on the ribosome. This binding prevents peptide bond formation and blocks the elongation of polypeptides. The nitro and hydroxyl groups have been shown to increase potency by increasing membrane permeability in Gram-negative bacteria. 23-o-Desmycinosyl-tylosin also has anti-inflammatory properties that may be due to its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis.
