Description

1,2-Di-O-hexyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine is a monolayer phospholipid that consists of two fatty acid chains and one glycerol group. This lipid is found in the cell membrane of eukaryotic cells and has a hydrophobic region. The long carbon chain on the 1,2 position can be either saturated or unsaturated. The orientation of the molecule is dependent on the number of hydrocarbon chains that are present. One such example would be an oriented molecule with a single long chain in which all three hydroxyl groups are on one side. This type of orientation is more prevalent in biological systems where it plays a role in water retention within the cell membrane.
