Amicarbazone is a triazolinone herbicide that has been shown to have physiological effects on perennial ryegrass. It is used as a selective pre-emergent herbicide with a wide range of action against annual and perennial grasses, broad-leaved weeds, and sedges. Amicarbazone is a lipophilic compound that readily penetrates the leaf cuticle, stomata, and epidermis of plants. This chemical reacts with hydrogen bonds in plant cell membranes, breaking them down and causing leakage of potassium ions. Amicarbazone can be synthesized by reacting aminomalonic acid with chloroacetaldehyde diethyl acetal or by reacting 2-chloro-3-nitrobenzoic acid with dimethyl 2-oxopropionate. The analytical method for amicarbazone is LC/MS/MS using neutral ph conditions.
