Description :19-Hydroxycortisol is a metabolite of cortisol, the main hormone released by the adrenal cortex. Cortisol is synthesized from cholesterol, and its production is stimulated by ACTH. 19-Hydroxycortisol can be transformed into cortisone in the presence of 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (17β HSD1). The transformation of 19-hydroxycortisol to cortisone is an important step in the synthesis of cortisol.19-Hydroxycortisol has a chemical transformation that prevents it from being used as a mineralocorticoid receptor agonist, which would cause hypertension and fluid retention.
