Description

BIBN 4096 is a calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) antagonist that blocks the receptor activity of CGRP. It has been shown to have therapeutic effects in migraine patients, including relief from pain and nausea, and an improvement in quality of life. BIBN 4096 has also been shown to be effective for patients with cluster headache. The drug’s efficacy was demonstrated in a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial with a total of 117 participants. In this study, the average duration of pain relief was longer for those treated with BIBN 4096 than for those who received placebo. In addition, BIBN 4096 was well tolerated by most participants and did not appear to cause any serious adverse events.
BIBN 4096 is currently being developed as a potential treatment for acute migraines and cluster headaches.
