Description

Histidine is a basic, non-essential amino acid that is found in proteins and enzymes. It is also a precursor for histamine and can be converted to histidine hydrochloride. Histidine is an important component of the photochemical reactions that enable plants to convert solar energy into chemical energy. Histidine is used as a food additive, an emulsifier, in cosmetics, and as an additive in the manufacture of plastics. It is also used in the production of acetonitrile, which is used to make pharmaceuticals and other chemicals. Histidine has been shown to be effective against radiation-induced damage to cells by scavenging free radicals generated during radiation therapy. Histidine has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Clostridium perfringens through its ability to inhibit protein synthesis.
