Description

2-Nitrophenyl a-D-galactopyranoside is a β-glucosidase inhibitor that blocks the hydrolysis of the α-glycoside linkage by competitive inhibition. It has been shown to inhibit both β-glucosidases from fungi and higher plants. The enzymatic reaction is catalyzed by an active site residue on the enzyme, which interacts with the substrate in an orientation that favors hydrolysis. Inhibition of this active site residue by 2-nitrophenyl a-D-galactopyranoside prevents this interaction and blocks the hydrolysis reaction. 2-Nitrophenyl a-D-galactopyranoside has been shown to be effective against hyperglycemia in rats.
