4-Amino-7-nitrobenzofurazan (4ABF) is an antimicrobial agent that has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi. It inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit and inhibiting the synthesis of proteins vital for cell division. 4ABF has been shown to have a linear calibration curve with a detection sensitivity of 0.5 fM, which can be used in experiments involving low concentrations of antibiotics. This drug also has photochemical properties, which allow it to act as a fluorescent derivative and quench free radicals. These properties are exploited in electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, which is used to measure changes in electron flow when 4ABF is present. The mechanism of action for this drug involves inhibition of tetracycline resistance by binding to its target site on the ribosome.
