2-Amino-3-methylbutyronitrile is an organic compound that is used as a chemical intermediate in the synthesis of various pharmaceuticals and pesticides. The compound is produced by the reaction of ethylene diamine with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a catalyst such as aluminum chloride. The product is a racemic mixture of two enantiomers, 2-amino-2-methylpropionitrile and 2-amino-3-methylbutyronitrile. It can be purified by high performance liquid chromatography (HPL) or recrystallization to give pure enantiomers. The compound has been shown to have insecticidal properties against pests such as aphids and spider mites, and it has been applied for agricultural use as an organic solvent for pest control.
