Cis-1-Amino-2-indanol is a potential drug candidate for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. It has been shown to inhibit HIV's ability to infect cells by binding to the virus's envelope and blocking it from attaching to the cell surface. The uptake rate of cis-1-Amino-2-indanol into the target cells is slow, which may be due to its high lipophilicity. Cis-1-Amino-2-indanol's mechanism of action is not yet fully understood but it may involve hydrogen bonding with the viral membrane and an efflux pump in the cell membrane.
