The reaction between the amine group and protonated DNA bases or amino groups on proteins may lead to the formation of adducts that interfere with DNA replication or protein synthesis. 4-Amino-2-methylpyridine also inhibits growth in organisms such as Streptococcus faecalis, which can cause diseases such as endocarditis.
