5-Acetyl thiophene-2-carboxylic acid is a compound that can be found in nature. It is an oxidant with a hydrocarbon group and a high yield. It is gaseous at room temperature. 5-Acetyl thiophene-2-carboxylic acid has inhibitory potency against aerobic bacteria, the selectivity profile of which depends on chloride concentration and aliphatic hydrocarbon group content. 5-Acetyl thiophene-2-carboxylic acid also inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to their cellular membrane and inhibiting the oxidation of chloride ions, which are essential for cell division. This compound also binds to oxygenated groups on bacterial cells, leading to the formation of reactive species that cause oxidative stress in cells.
