• Description: Polymyxin B is a polycationic antibiotic that has been used in the treatment of infectious diseases and as an ophthalmic ointment. It is effective against bacteria, fungi, and parasites. Polymyxin B exhibits antimicrobial activity by binding to microbial membranes and causing lysis. The redox potential of this antibiotic is low, which can make it difficult for it to penetrate into cells. This drug also exhibits anti-inflammatory effects through its ability to inhibit gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) synthesis in bowel cells, which leads to decreased inflammation.
