1-Acetylpiperidin-4-ol is a small, bioactive molecule with a catalytic activity against glycogen phosphorylase. It is an antidiabetic drug that can be used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. 1-Acetylpiperidin-4-ol binds to the allosteric site of glycogen phosphorylase and inhibits its activity, which prevents the breakdown of muscle glycogen. This inhibition leads to increased blood glucose levels. The crystal structure of 1-acetylpiperidin-4-ol has been determined using X-ray crystallography and unambiguously confirmed by NMR spectroscopy.
